![]() Which is part of the problem.SEATTLE-( BUSINESS WIRE) (NASDAQ: AMZN)-Today, Amazon announced the launch of Kindle Vella, a new mobile-first, interactive reading experience for serialized stories. You don't have to take it down any more.Įdited with link to this story that both says serialization is growing and mentions that Vella is trying to get an older audience. That was the way it was when it released. You can put your book on KU and keep it on Vella to get the bonuses and double dip. I make about $100 a month in bonuses with laughable reads.īTW- There's not a 30-day takedown. With that said, Vella has crappy searchability, and Amazon has put no effort into making it easy to get there or to a particular story. ![]() To say serialization is out of the 1800s, well, it's pretty obvious you're not following trends. If you look at the numbers people are pulling on Radish.in the millions of reads, there's definitely a platform for it. I think there is a thirty day take down if I recall. I’ve continued on with the storyline and plan to just release the entire thing on KDP as one piece, which Vella allows. I’m making more money from the bonus than I would from simple releasing an ebook cold, and it gave me a nice motivation to do a rewrite of the novel before letting some others read it. Just go there and read some episodes and you’ll see what I mean.įor me, I knew that going in and am fine with it. Vella makes it too hard for someone to read something, or to even find something on their site. Maybe back in the newspapers of the 1800’s, but not anymore. My view of Vella is that there has never been a market for serialized fiction for a reason. The general consensus was they liked the book but the platform was too much of an annoyance for them, so could I send them an ePub or even a. Only two used their then-free Amazon credits to keep reading. The remaining readers read a couple of the free episodes. Others simply didn’t want to read things on their phone. It is not accessible outside of the US, so there went my overseas readers. Of the forty, over half couldn’t or wouldn’t access the Vella site itself. I revised each chapter before posting so it was in a good first draft phase. It was my NaNoWriMo project, so they knew what I had been working on. I then posted a link to forty friends who wanted to read it. If it’s not finished, why invest the time only to be disappointed. I’d read that few people would read an unclosed series, which makes sense. ![]() ![]() I posted an entire novel, each chapter an episode, then closed it the series. I’ve made $120 or so from the bonuses Amazon pays to have content posted. Otherwise, if Vella isn't working out for you, maybe you could look into other serial platforms? I haven't tried these, but people sometimes mention Radish & Royal Road as alternatives! I hope you find something that works for you! If you don't have an existing audience/following & don't want to pay for ads, that might be the only way to go about it. It seems like a lot of people in those groups are just looking to swap reads, which I believe is against Amazon's policy, so be careful how you approach it, but I honestly get a decent number of my reads from stuff like that. If you want more eyes on your story, there are a lot of self-promo Facebook groups (the biggest one is called like "Kindle Vella Readers & Writers Promotion" or something like that) where you can post your story. I would never pay for advertising at this point, personally, since most readers don't seem to know what Vella is & it seems too complicated to have to promote both my story and the platform in one ad. My impression is that most people who read something on Vella are linked to a specific story & don't stick around to discover new things to read afterwards it seems like Amazon's (limited) advertising so far also highlights specific authors/stories and I don't know if that visibility is trickling down to the rest of us. From the perspective of someone who might be considered mildly successful on Vella (permanent spot in the middle of the top faved list, consistently in the top 5-10 of my genre, etc.): I honestly just don't think a lot of readers are using the platform at this point.
